Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, on Friday expressed firm opposition to the United States negotiating any agreement with China's Taiwan region that has sovereignty implications or is of an official nature.

Ma made the remarks in response to a media query regarding the announcement that the U.S. would sign a trade agreement with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities in Taiwan.

China urges the U.S. to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, Ma said, adding that the DPP authorities' act of selling out the interests of businesses and people on the island for political gain is doomed to failure.
