Visitor arrivals in Macao drop 85 pct in 2020

MACAO, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The number of visitor arrivals in Macao in 2020 declined by 85 percent year on year to 5,896,848, the Macao Special Administrative Region's (SAR) statistics department said on Wednesday.

The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that overnight visitors and same-day visitors totaled 2,822,037 and 3,074,811, respectively.

In terms of the source market, the number of Chinese mainland visitors fell by 83 percent year on year to 4,754,239 in 2020. Besides, visitors from the Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan fell by 88.5 percent and 90.2 percent year on year, respectively.

The average stay length of visitors went up by 0.2 day year on year to 1.4 days. The duration for overnight visitors rose 0.6 day year on year to 2.8 days, whereas that for same-day visitors remained unchanged at 0.2 day.

Analyzed by means of entry, there were 5,033,614 visitor arrivals by land in 2020, and 76.4 percent of them arrived through the Border Gate. Visitor arrivals by air and by sea added up to 436,936 and 426,298, respectively.

In December alone, the number of visitor arrivals grew 3.6 percent month on month to 659,407. However, the figure represented a year-on-year decline of 78.6 percent.
