Asian stocks drift lower, Hong Kong goes against tide

SYDNEY, NSW, Australia - Stocks in Asia were limp on Monday, although the Hong Kong market showed some life.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 eased 22.25 points or 0.09 percent to 23,494.34.

The Australian All Ords fell 16.40 points or 0.26 percent to 6,557.30.

China's Shanghai Composite dipped 28.66 points or 0.87 percent to 3,249.34.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng lifted 132.68 points or 0.54 percent to 24,918.78.

On foreign exchange markets the U.S. dollar was a touch stronger. The euro weakened to 1.1833. The British pound slipped to 1.3022. The Japanese yen and Swiss franc were little changed at 104.91 and 0.9051 respectively.

The Canadian dollar was a few points lower at 1.3163, as was the Australian dollar at 0.7112. The New Zealand dollar however was in demand at 0.6684.
