Mixed end to week for Asian markets on Friday

SYDNEY, Australia - Stocks in Asia were on the rise on Friday, while the U.S. dollar was mixed.

Only the Hong Kong Hang Seng slipped. It lost 47.66 points or 0.19% to close on Friday at 25,183.01.

In Japan the Nikkei 225 gained 39.75 points or 0.17% to 23,289.35.

China's Shanghai Composite rose 39.37 points or 1.19% to 3,360.10.

The Australian All Ordinaries climbed 37.80 points or 0.61% to 6,261.70

The euro, which traded above 1.1800 for most of the day, dipped just under to 1.1797 by the Sydney close Friday.

The Japanese yen edged cautiously higher to 106.78. The British pound softened to 1.3061.

The Swiss franc eased to 0.9106.

The Canadian dollar inched down to 1.3235. The Australian dollar was a fraction stronger at 0.7152. The New Zealand dollar was a tad weaker at 0.6540.

Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 80.12 points, or 0.29%, at 27,896.72.

The Standard and Poor's 500 dipped 6.92 points, or 0.20%, to 3,373.43.

The Nasdaq Composite climbed 30.27 points, or 0.27%, to 11,042.50.
