SYDNEY, Australia - Stocks in China rallied on Wednesday, helping bourses in Hong Kong and Australia to also record credible gains.

In Tokyo however markets fell.

China's Shanghai Composite closed 41.31 points or 1.38% higher Wednesday at 3,025.98.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 125.91 points or 0.52% 24,427.19.

The Australian All Ordinaries added 39.70 points or 0.66% to 6,041.00.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 fell 166.41 points or 0.75% to 22,121.73.

On foreign exchange markets the U.S. dollar failed to hold any ground. The euro remained well bid at 1.1234 following positive German retail sales.

The British pound was well bid at 1.2399. The Japanese yen rose to 107.49. The Swiss franc was firm at 0.9470.

The Canadian dollar edged up to 1.3553, while the Australian dollar was slightly higher at 0.6913.

Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was ahead 217.08 points, or 0.85%, at 25,812.88.

The Standard and Poor's 500 added 47.05 points, or 1.54%, to 3,100.29.

The Nasdaq Composite did best of all in percentage terms, rising 184.61 points, or 1.87%, to 10,058.77.
