TOKYO, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened lower Friday, following U.S. shares losing ground overnight on jobless claims data showing that millions of Americans are continuing to lose their jobs each week due to the ongoing effects of the pandemic.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 36.99 points, or 0.18 percent, from Thursday to 20,515.32.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged down 1.50 points, or 0.10 percent, at 1,489.71.

Insurance, farm and fishery, and food-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
