Stock markets in Asia move sideways Wednesday

SYDNEY, Australia - There was little movement on Asian markets on Wednesday .

Shares in China closed slightly ahead, which in Japan and Australia they dipped slightly.

The Nikkei 255 was down 40.61 points or 0.18% at 21,960.71.

The Shanghai Composite edged up 7.54 points or 0.25% to 2,985.66.

The Australian All Ordinaries was off 10.50 points or 0.15% at 6,791.20.

The British pound, which had earlier topped the 1.2500 level was retreating around the close, as Europe and the UK markets were opening. The pound late in the Asian session was quoted at 1.2477.

The euro was easier at 1.1054. The Japanese yen was unchanged at 108.19. The Swiss franc was a fraction weaker at 0.9949.

The Canadian dollar fell to 1.3262. The Australian dollar was softer at 0.6836. The New Zealand dollar fell to 0.6335.

Overnight night on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrials were ahead 33.77 points or 0.12% at 27,110.59.

The Standard and Poor's 500 advanced 7.72 points or 0.26% to 3,005.68.

The Nasdaq Composite gained 32.47 points or 0.40% to 8,186.02.
