South Korea has decided to pardon convicted businessman, former Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee.
South Korea has decided to pardon convicted businessman, former Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee.

He has been pardoned to allow him to join in the bid for South Korea to land the Winter Olympics for Pyongchang in 2018.

The South Korean justice minister said on Tuesday the decision had been taken so Lee could go back onto the International Olympic Committee.

Lee Kun-hee stepped down from his chairmanship of Samsung in April 2008 after charges of favouritism and tax evasion.

He received a suspended sentence for tax evasion, the only charge on which he was convicted.

Lee gave up his rights and duties as an IOC member when the tax evasion scandal surfaced.

He still owns 3.4 percent of Samsung Electronics.

His son Jay Y. Lee was named this month chief operating officer of Samsung Electronics in a management reshuffle.
